The English Cocker Spaniel is cheerful, playful and thrives on companionship and being part of the family. He does require significant exercise.  

Characteristics and Size

The English Cocker Spaniel is a joyful and affectionate breed. It is medium-sized with an average height of 1 ft 3 inches to 1 ft 5 inches and weighs between 26 to 34 pounds. Specially used for hunting birds, this breed is an amazing outdoor companion. Its life expectancy is up to 14 years. Belonging to the group of sporting breeds, it needs a rigorous fitness regime.

Previously, both, the English and American Cocker spaniels were considered as one breed. But in 1930 it was recognized as separate dogs, based on the prominent difference in their size and body type. English Cocker Spaniel is a purebred and has originated in England.

English Cocker is very fond of humans and is content with their family. When left alone, it suffers from separation anxiety and may also get destructive. For mental stimulation, training is a must for this breed. While training, it might get stubborn at times but harsh punishment further demotivates it.

This pooch is quite cordial with humans, kids, and other pets. However, its friendly nature restricts it to become a watchdog. However, it generally barks a lot and will raise an alarm when a threat is around. Make sure you drain their energy consistently to avoid obesity and destructive behavior.

Health

This playful pooch has long ears that are prone to an ear infection if not taken care of. Apart from that, they are also susceptible to get Congenital Deafness. Some of the other common health problems are – Renal Failure and Hip Dysplasia. To protect them from obesity, feed them dry, high-quality dog food, not more than one cup per meal.

They are adaptable to all households as long as their fitness needs are met. Their supreme stamina makes them enjoy long walks and heavy exercises. Socialization is also necessary along with obedience to make it more versatile.
