REAL STORY
The furry soldier had been named ‘Marshall ’ by Fateh Singh; the proud owner of the dog always had a flair for defense forces and their glamour and nobility that the officer ranks had about them. The Dog was a fairy white Boxer and to the delight of every watcher, he behaved just like ‘Marshal ’, as his name suggested.
He would respond only to people who he thought were up to his stature, and otherwise would keep looking the other way around if he would find someone unfit for a face to face conversation.
Fateh Singh had a joint family so Marshall had got accustomed to a lot of attention and love from everyone. Marshall had his house behind the stairs that took off to the upper floors from the wide lobby of the Fateh’s house.
The lobby was totally air-conditioned so it wouldn’t be wrong to say that Marshal wasn’t that tough when it came to taking the heat, although his name suggested otherwise.
White and furry Marshal would sit easily in his place in the lobby while every passerby family member would adore him every now and then. Marshall would yawn in his own listless manner at every head ruffle he received.
He loved his food and liked to go to sleep after eating; and as his ritual was, he would feel hungry every time he got out from a nap. Not just Fateh but everyone in the house had immense love for the dog and wouldn’t spend a day without seeing and cuddling him.
One day the whole family had to leave for an untimely demise of a young relative and found themselves when it came to Marshall. No one found it fit to take the dog along to the unfortunate house, but they also knew that they couldn’t leave him alone. Unsure of what to do, Fateh signaled Marshal to hop in the car and the dog was already on his toes.
Fateh called one of his friends in the wee hours and handed over the dog to his friend, Harry, who was still half asleep, and dizzy from the untimely nap break that Fateh had forced upon him. For Harry it wasn’t an early morning; it was still night.
Fateh forced the lease of the dog into Harry’s hands and told him to take care of Marshal for one day as they will be back tomorrow for him. Harry stood there with marshal by his side as they saw Fateh and his family leave in their car.
Harry took the dog inside his house reluctantly, tied him with the entrance door of the house, and went back to sleep again. Marshall, all of a sudden, found himself alone and it wasn’t something that the boxer was used to. Marshall soon started to panic and let out desperate barks calling for some company.
Harry in his sleep saw a dream in which he was chased by 4 stray dogs. The dogs almost caught him and opened their jaw to bite his leg when the boy got up all drenched in sweat. The dream was a result of the constant cries of Marshall.
Harry got irritated at this and went tramping towards the dog. He started shouting at him as the dog hid behind the gate.
Harry left and then came back with milk and bread from the kitchen as he thought the dog might be hungry and if he eats something, the noise might stop. He fed Marshal the milk and bread who refused to eat at first but then started slurping the milk. Harry marveled at the beautiful white boxer and for a moment fell in love with the creature. But soon as his nature was, he got distracted and went back to his room.
Marshall started barking again and the bark of the dog would echo endlessly in the long lobby of the house. Harry got angry at it the dog and soon took the lash of the dog, took it all over to the roof of the house. He tied the dog at the top under a shed. Marshall stood on two legs trying to follow his new caretaker.
Harry looked behind once and thought of taking the dog downstairs along with him. As soon as this thought crossed him, sounds of the Marshall’s bark echoing in the whole house filled his ear. He walked downstairs leaving the dog behind.
Harry slept for another hour, woke up took a bath when he had a call from a friend asking if he wanted to go out and have some drinks. Harry said yes and hung up and started getting ready. He was hardly ready when his friend came thundering into his house. “Come on let’s go, brother! Hurry up!” he said.
Harry and his friend went out.
He came back late at night all drunk and dizzy. Harry could not manage his walk, and somehow reached his bed and dozed off straight away. He woke up the next day with a strong hangover swaying his world up and down.
He held his head and dragged himself to the washroom. Washing his face in there, the sounds of dog bark that he had been hearing yesterday in the bathroom, the sounds that made his life uneasy yesterday stuck his mind. He thanked God that the sounds were no more there.
The sounds are no more! He thought. Why aren’t the sounds no more? O god! He mumbled with all his ability rushed to the roof for the dog. He ran and saw the Marshal lying under the shed where he had left him. He took a sigh of relief and filled a tub of water for Marshal.
Harry placed the tub of water in front of Marshal only to see no reaction from him. He pushed the tub further closer and called out his name in the sweetest voice. Marshal still exhibited no interest so harry thought of patting him on his head.
As soon as harry touched the dog’s head, he went numb. The dog’s body was cold- lifeless cold. He panicked and filled a tub of water and splashed it onto the dog.
“Marshal!” cried out Harry on top of his lungs.
“Oh my God!” he is dead.
Fateh came in the afternoon and found the dog dead. The dog’s body smelled bad. Fateh, Harry, and a friend took the dead body and buried Marshal in Fateh’s farmland.
It was later found out that Marshall died of a cardiac arrest. He felt that he was abandoned by Fateh and his family and that he was left alone by his new owner. Dejected and lonely, the dog had died on the roof of the house that had Harry had left for him.
The end of Marshal’s life brought an end to Fateh and Harry’s friendship. It also killed Fateh’s ignorance and Harry’s laziness.
Marshal’s and Fateh’s bond, their separation; Marshall feeling dejected and left alone and dying in the separation of his human is the perfect example that portrays that dogs are indeed the real friend of man.
A lot many other stories of dogs saving their owner’s lives from dangers and dying in an attempt further add up to this never-ending list of instances where Dogs have proven to be the best of all mates to us, humans.
