About Dachshunds

These are short-legged dogs, so don’t expect them to leap or run distances. However, the most interesting part is that this 600-year-old breed is tireless, full of energy, and makes great watchdogs. Also, they have a quite powerful bark – given their size.

A standard Dachshund has a long body and is muscular with short stubby legs. This breed has a long snout and paws that are specifically evolved for digging. Their deep bosom gives them enough space for the development of a powerful heart and lungs.

It is crucial for pet parents to feed their Dachshunds to limit as they are vulnerable to gaining weight. Because these are hunting dogs, Dachshunds will chase anything from birds to small animals and balls. This breed is playful yet stubborn and does not require much exercise. However, two walks daily are highly recommended. Dachshunds are highly social and loyal. As a pet parent, you may experience that they remain happier indoors.

As this is a strong-headed dog breed, one may have problems training it. At this point in time, your patience is crucial, and using positive reinforcements will go a long way in having a disciplined Dachshund by your side. Expect moderate shedding if you are planning to adopt one.

Health

Brushing them weekly should do the trick. This breed is an easy target for bacterial or viral infections (parvo, rabies, and distemper), diabetes, bladder or kidney stones, epilepsy, and hip and elbow dysplasia.

Recommended Health Test from the National Breed Club:

  • Patella Evaluation
  • Ophthalmologist Evaluation
  • Cardiac Exam
